Chairman's Blog
The APS is the foremost organisation in the UK promoting the pharmaceutical sciences. Over the past few months the APS Board has been active identifying the most significant scientific challenges that face pharmaceutical scientists. The APS is well placed to coordinate activities to tackle these challenges and in the process help its members and ultimately get medicines to patients more efficiently and effectively. Our intent is that the APS Focus Groups drive our scientific efforts. To this end we are recommending changes to their organisation. We are proposing the creation of nine FGs in total and have recently surveyed existing FG members. Once we have their views we will contact all APS members in July and invite contributions to the new FGs with a formal launch at UKPharmSci 2011 (31st Aug to 2nd Sept). We believe this will be an exciting development which will reinvigorate the APS's focus on science and provide an opportunity for members to be more involved in tackling the key issues we face. I look forward to communicating further details to you in July.

The Academy will be contacting all of its members very shortly with respect to membership renewals and this year there will be a significant difference. We will be offering all non-student members the opportunity to become MAPS (Members of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Science). For those who renew or indeed take up membership for the first time a certificate will be sent confirming  your membership status. We will also be offering a higher membership category of membership for those individuals who are more established in their careers as Fellows of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Science (FAPS). The eligibility criteria for FAPS can be found at http://www.apsgb.co.uk/PostNoms/Fellowship.asp. I would like to take this opportunity to urge all Professional Pharmaceutical Scientists to renew or join the Academy and become a part of the growing community of Pharmaceutical Scientists who are enjoying the many network and other befits of membership.

Chairman's Blog

The recent news surrounding the closure of the Pfizer site at Sandwich is very disappointing and a significant setback for Pharmaceutical Sciences in the UK. The news is also a great personal blow for those working at the Pfizer site and I very much hope that some Pharmaceutical activity will be able to continue at Sandwich in some guise or other. The Academy of Pharmaceutical Science, as a genuine gesture to support Pharmaceutical Science, will be hosting job adverts on its website free of charge for the foreseeable future. Please contact the Academy directly for information around the advertisement of vacancies. In these difficult times it is important that we continue to promote Pharmaceutical Science and actively demonstrate that the UK is a place which leads the world in both in terms of the quality and breadth of work which takes place within its shores.
