Chairman's Blog
The recent news surrounding the closure of the Pfizer site at Sandwich is very disappointing and a significant setback for Pharmaceutical Sciences in the UK. The news is also a great personal blow for those working at the Pfizer site and I very much hope that some Pharmaceutical activity will be able to continue at Sandwich in some guise or other. The Academy of Pharmaceutical Science, as a genuine gesture to support Pharmaceutical Science, will be hosting job adverts on its website free of charge for the foreseeable future. Please contact the Academy directly for information around the advertisement of vacancies. In these difficult times it is important that we continue to promote Pharmaceutical Science and actively demonstrate that the UK is a place which leads the world in both in terms of the quality and breadth of work which takes place within its shores.

Advertise Vacancies for FREE
The closure of the Pfizer R&D; site at Sandwich was a real shock to the pharmaceutical community and, in combination with other recent announcements of site closures, there is now a wealth of talent available that simply cannot be lost for the sake of science in the UK. The Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences wishes to help their cause and, following a number of enquiries regarding job opportunities in pharmaceutical industry since the announcement, has taken the decision to offer its services to act as an opportunities hub for the pharmaceutical science community by offering to advertise any vacancies on its website for FREE. Please visit the vacancies section of the APS website (http://www.apsgb.co.uk/SituationsVacant/) for more details on how to submit vacancies or e-mail the secretariat at [email protected]
There are almost 1000 people now connected to the APS via the Linked-In community (http://www.linkedin.com/groupRegistration?gid=2208128). Hence please continue to use this as a discussion forum and encourage others to sign up to ensure the APS continues to develop as the voice for pharmaceutical sciences and to generate an active vacancies web-site to help support affected colleagues search for new positions.

Chairman's Blog
I would like to wish all members and followers of the academy a very Happy New Year. The academy is moving forward with the introduction of post nominal qualifications for all members. These will be implemented from March 1st and will include "student member", Member (MAPS) and Fellow (FAPS). The secretariat of the academy will be in touch with respect to your membership in the coming weeks. The academy is very conscious of its role as been a facilitator and promoter of the latest developments in the Pharmaceutical Sciences and to ensure that we continue to do this effectively we are revising and boosting our Focus groups. There are several important scientific and professional conferences being organised by the academy and its focus groups in 2011, please click on the events to get more details. We will be shortly putting out the 2nd call for papers for the academys conference PharmSci 2011 "The Science of Medicines". For our early career members I would particularly like to draw your attention to the Industrial Insights meeting, April 14th & 15th at Pfizer, Sandwich, Kent. I am attending myself and I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible at the event. The academy is always keen to work with partner organisations and through collaboration ensure the very best subject leaders are given a conference platform to disseminate the work taking places within that discipline. It is also through collaboration and partnership that we can draw strength and influence to ensure that the promotion and advancement of Pharmaceutical Science continues to be a key priority through 2011 and beyond.
