The Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences
is the professional body for the
Pharmaceutical Sciences in United
Kingdom. A Pharmaceutical Scientist is
an individual who contributes to
bringing a new drug from concept through
to a medicinal product. This includes,
but is not exclusive to, individuals in
academia, industry, regulation, clinical
research and manufacturing.
The mission of the Academy
of Pharmaceutical Sciences is to champion
innovation and opportunity in Pharmaceutical
Sciences for the delivery of medicines.
In order to achieve this mission, our aims
are to:
Promote the Pharmaceutical Sciences to
stakeholders to facilitate understanding and
achieve engagement
Share learning, drive collaboration,
partnership and innovation
Deliver insights into industry and
academic roles for aspiring scientists

3rd Annual MIBio Conference - 29th October 2013, Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge University
MONDAY, 8 JULY 2013
Following on from the great success of MIBio 2012 the Formulation Science and Technology Group (FSTG) of the Royal Society Chemistry (RSC) and the Academy of Pharmaceutical Scientists (APS) are pleased to announce:
3rd Annual MIBio Conference
Molecular Interactions in Biopharmaceutical Formulations
High concentration biologics:
Viscosity, characterisation and delivery
29th October 2013, Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge University
Also assisting, to further ensure success of the event, are The Joint Colloids Group (RSC) and the Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN).
The MIBio conference series engages world leading experts from academia and industry in discussions on how the latest molecular interaction based discoveries can be exploited in biopharmaceutical formulation to produce more effective and safer therapeutic products.
The main focus of MIBio 2013 will be on the viscosity, characterisation and delivery of high concentration biologics – the big challenges in biopharmaceutical formulation. This event will take place on 29th October, 2013 in the scenic setting of Fitzwilliam College at Cambridge University (Cambridge, UK).
We are building on the extremely positive feedback received from speakers, delegates and sponsors after the 2012 conference to make MIBio 2013 an even more engaging, interactive and memorable event. High calibre speakers will cover a number of topics related to formulating high concentration proteins, including fundamental understanding of interactions in crowded protein solutions and exploiting the knowledge in rational design of concentrated protein therapeutics.
The speakers list includes:
• Jai Pathak (MedImmune, USA)
• Davendra Kalonia (University of Connecticut, USA)
• Jose Garcia de la Torre (Universidad de Murcia, Spain)
• Cecile Dreiss (King’s College London, UK)
• German Rivas Caballero (CSIC, Spain)

Have you read this article "Towards Global Stability Protocols: A Decade of Lost Opportunities?"
TUESDAY, 25 JUNE 2013
You will find it on the website of the Joint Pharmaceutical Analysis Group (www.jpag.org). Written by Dr Dave Elder, it is reproduced with permission of European Pharmaceutical Review.
While you are on the website, look for details of the forthcoming symposium on "Meeting stability challenges" to be held at the Royal Society of Chemistry on Thursday 4th July. This symposium is highly relevant to pharmaceutical analysts, quality control analysts, quality assurance professionals, qualified persons and regulatory affairs professionals from pharmaceutical industry, CMOs and contract laboratories. We are anticipating a big attendance for this topical subject so book now to avoid disappointment.

APS Biopharmaceutics Applied biopharmaceutics - understanding bioequivalence, biowavers and IVIVCs
TUESDAY, 25 JUNE 2013
10th July 2013, MSD Innovation Centre, Hoddesdon
Biopharmaceutical properties help guide formulation design and choice of delivery system, however profiling dosage form performance under conditions which are relevant to in vivo conditions remains a challenge for pharmaceutical scientists. Using this information to predict clinical performance or optimise clinical study design is a further challenge for product development teams. This meeting aims to provide a forum for scientific discussion of the current best practice and emerging science for these themes. Particular emphasis is given to new methods to characterise the in vitro performance of oral formulations and the use of biomodelling to predict clinical performance. Invited speakers include experts from industrial, academic and regulatory groups who will share current perspectives on the use of biopharmaceutics data to support product development.
This meeting is aimed at industrial and academic scientists working in the areas of biopharmaceutics, formulation design, regulatory CMC and analytical development. Scientists who are new to the area will also find the symposium useful for gaining a broad understanding of the key scientific and technical issues. There will be an opportunity to submit poster presentations and three posters will be selected for a short talks session.

SME showcase at APS PharmSci 2013
TUESDAY, 25 JUNE 2013
The APS is now actively seeking potential participants for the SME Showcase at APS PharmSci 2013 and would ask all interested organisations to contact either Bill Dawson or Maureen Coleman directly with a short abstract (250 words) to allow selection for the programme. It will be a competitive process with a number of places held for exhibitors at APS PharmSci 2013.
The SME Showcase has been run since the APS was formed and has been hugely successful with a range of companies able to display their successful products and services and network with potential clients and partners. During this plenary session, the format for each SME will constitute a 5-10 minute presentation followed by a brief Q and A and then a day of potential networking with members of the audience.
With strong pharmaceutical science interests, medicines, diagnostics, devices and services are all valid subjects for the Showcase.
Closing date for abstract submission is June 28th 2013 and notification of success will be by July 19th 2013.
