Medicines for older adults: Learning from practice to develop patient centric drug products

13th March 2013, GlaxoSmithKline R&D, Gunnels Wood Road, Stevenage, Hertfordshire, SG1 2NY, UK

This one day meeting is organised jointly by the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Geriatric Medicines Society and the UCL School of Pharmacy

The UN recently warned that the world needs to do more to prepare for the impact of a rapidly ageing population and in 2011 the European Medicines Agency put forward their Geriatric Medicines Strategy Roadmap for 2015 in order to review and reflect about the impact of the aging population and increasing (high) age of the patients for drug development and authorization. This meeting will focus on the development of age and disease appropriate medicines to serve the future patient populations. Practitioners will highlight the requirements of the older population including the physiological effects of ageing and their impact on medicines development and the challenges of compliance. The meeting will also highlight what we can learn from the Paediatric Formulation Initiative and what synergies exist with medicines for older adults.

This meeting is primarily aimed at Pharmaceutical Scientists interested in the challenges and opportunities presented by developing medicines suitable for older adults. It will also be of interest to Pharmacists, Clinicians and Regulators involved with the treatment of older adults.
